Vol. VII, Episode 7

Coffee for Ten Men

Sit around the fire with Will as we go over the recipe from Joseph J. Woodward's "The Hospital Steward's Manual" (1862) on how to prepare enough coffee for a mess of 10 men.

Coffee for Ten Men

Bring to a boil 9 pints of water. If you want to add milk to your coffee, then boil 7 pints water.
When the water begins to boil, add 7.5 oz of ground coffee and stir.
When coffee starts to boil, remove it from the fire and add 1 pint of cold water.
Let it sit for 10 min, or long enough for the dregs to settle.
Pour the coffee into another vessel leaving the dregs in the original pot.
If you are going to add milk, bring 2 pints of milk to a boil and then add it to the coffee.
Final brew results in 10 pints of coffee.
