Vol. XI, Episode 3

USCT Stack Arms

With the issuing of General Order 143 by the War Department in 1863, the United States Colored Troops were officially formed. These regiments of African American soldiers contributed greatly to the Union’s victory in the war, making up about 10% of the Union Army. To facilitate consistency in training for the newly formed regiments, a dedicated infantry tactics manual for the USCT was published the same year. Previous episodes have explored stack arms through various drill manuals. In this episode, we continue this by learning how stack arms was taught to the USCT regiments as they prepared to fight for freedom.
