Vol. XI, Episode 18

Confederate Ambulance Corps Arm Band

Dana Shoaf, Director of Interpretation at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, opens the archives vault to share a rare item with you. It is an original Confederate Ambulance Corps identifying band. It is a close match to the description provided in 1862 by CS Surgeon John Chisholm, “the members of this corps are designated by wearing around their caps a red band with ambulance corps printed in conspicuous white letters.” This is an amazing artifact to see and to hear the history of how they came into use. Thank you to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick Maryland for opening their doors to share with you.
